HOW TO TEACH YOUR CHILD TO PRAY

Hey, welcome to Every Prayer Matters Blog. My name is Justice Rodriguez, and I help mommas like you implement the “How To” in a powerful prayer life as you navigate through your life as a wife and mother.

In today’s blog, we will discover how to teach your child how to pray !

This blog aims to help you see how your prayers set the tone for every area of your life and even in your children’s life.

Within this blog, there are affiliate links and such because I use them and believe they can help you make your mommy life more fun and, well… support your self-care. Please note that this blog is about my personal story and adventure. I’m not a doctor or a professional to give you medical advice. I’m simply a wife, a mommy of 2, and a developing business owner sold out for Jesus who wants to encourage you in your prayer life because I believe Every Prayer Matters To God!

In my last blog, we talked about the importance of your child knowing how to pray. In this blog, I want to dive into ways to teach them how to get started. Now I want you to remember two crucial things.

First, every child is unique, and how we go about teaching them may be different from how you teach the next. My most honest advice is that you take these tips and get creative, make them your own, personalize them for your child’s age and learning style.

Second, being consistent is vital! If there is one thing I have learned in my three years of being a mama is that being consistent is essential, and even though I am not perfect by any means, I do my very best to be consistent with my boys!

You will not be perfect every day, so my advice is to start small and stick to something consistent.

Sometimes as parents, we overwhelm ourselves because we want to give our children the world and every star in the sky when in reality, all they want is for you to be there.

“Now they were bringing even infants to him so that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:15-17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

How to start :

  1. Be the Model

Your babies are watching you already as you’re making them breakfast, singing their favorite songs with them, how you do your basic daily routine, when you are on your phone, how you react to certain things, and even when you are in prayer.

As I’m getting more into learning about positive parenting and how to connect with my child, something I knew was that if I wanted to see good behaviors, I would need to be the model first.

Allow them to see you in prayer, pray out loud to hear what it sounds like to talk to God. One of my favorite things to do is invite my oldest Xzavier in to say amen with me.

Doesn’t he always follow along ? No .

Does he give me the biggest smile when I ask him if he wants to talk to God with me ? Yes !

Being the model of a good healthy prayer life doesn’t only encourage your children but it encourages you to remain strong in your faith , I call that a two for one ( the one ☝️)

  1. Teach them Gratitude

The one thing I love doing every morning is thanking God for waking me up , a fresh start and a new chance to try it again.

You can teach your babies this by praying with them when they wake up, at breakfast ,dinner time or whichever time works for you both and even when they are too small to even understand praying over them.

It can sound something like :

Lord , Thank you for waking (insert child’s name) up this morning ,In Jesus Name, Amen !

Or

Lord , Thank you for a new day ! In Jesus Name, Amen !

And if your child is a bit older or has some more words I encourage you to prompt them to share what they are grateful for .

This can be a super special moment to see what your child has on their heart and can allow you to pray for them in your quiet time .

  1. Guide them in praying scriptures

Teaching your child to pray scripture over themselves is such a powerful thing !

Even though my son is just coming into his voice I love affirming him and praying out loud for him and encouraging him to come into agreement with me .

So that may look something like

Lord , I thank you that Xzavier is fearfully and wonderfully made in your image

In Jesus name , Amen !

Or

Lord , Thank you for helping Xzavier be kind to his brother.

In Jesus name , Amen!

And sometimes I’ll get a little amen back, sometimes I don’t but both times I thank God !

  1. Have Fun and Share Jesus with your children !

Teaching your children to give praise to the Lord is just as important as teaching them to pray !

I encourage you to take one hour ( maybe start with 15-20 minutes ) out of your day with your babies to just listen to some worship music or even Christian children songs and see if it doesn’t help you and your babies calm down and fix your focus .

If this encourages you, leave a comment, and or share on social media!
